Friday: Arrive, Eat Early, Ride the 7:00 PM
Aim to reach Frostburg by late afternoon. Check-in at The Tunnel Hotel is contactless at any hour — your door code lands on your phone — so a stop at the Trail Inn Cafe downstairs (open 8 AM to 6 PM daily) for an early dinner is the smart first move, because it will be closed when you get back. At 6:30 PM walk across the street to the Frostburg Depot at 19 Depot St, sign the Tracks & Yaks waiver, and board the 7:00 PM Mountain Christmas Light Delight: a 2.5-mile downhill coast through hundreds of lights and holiday displays, no pedaling, Christmas music in the trees, and a shuttle back up to the depot.
Friday nights also run an 8:00 PM departure if your drive runs long. Either way the evening ends a one-minute walk from your bed.
Saturday Morning: The Trail in Winter Light
The Great Allegheny Passage trailhead is 300 yards from the hotel door. Head east toward Cumberland — the grade is open all winter, flat, and lined with bare-branch views the leafy months hide — and turn around whenever the cold wins. Big Savage Tunnel, up the mountain to the west, is typically gated from late November until spring, so the eastern direction is the one that works. Back at the inn, breakfast at the cafe runs from 8 AM.
Saturday Afternoon: Main Street and the Depot District
Downtown Frostburg is a walk up the hill: shops, restaurants, and local pubs along a brick Main Street that typically dresses itself for the season. Town event calendars change year to year, so check current listings for anything specific rather than banking on it. Down in the depot district, the Thrasher Carriage Museum sits beside the hotel and the historic depot and turntable are steps away. Dinner belongs to Main Street on Saturday — the cafe closes at 6 PM.
Saturday Night: Ride Again, or Watch From the Porch
Plenty of weekend guests ride twice. The Saturday 8:00 PM departure is the darkest and most dramatic run of the week, and at $29 a person the second ticket is cheap for what it is. If once was enough, the light tunnel is visible from the depot district, and the inn's warm windows are a fine place to watch the railbikes roll out. Anyone staying through Monday should know the weeknight price drops to $20 a person on fifteen December dates — Monday through Wednesday nights — which turns a two-night weekend into a three-night one for less than you would guess.
Sunday: Breakfast and the Road
Checkout is 11:00 AM, one tap in Manage My Stay. The cafe opens at 8 AM for coffee and a hot breakfast, which leaves time for a last walk to the trailhead before the drive. Western Maryland's other holiday rail tradition, the scenic railroad's seasonal trains out of Cumberland, runs on its own schedule — worth checking if you are heading that direction with time to spare.
Booking the Weekend
Everything above books at tunnelhotel.com/book. Choose the ride first — riders, night, departure — and add one of the two winter rooms for that night: the Railrider Retreat Suite (Room 201, sleeps four, $169.86 with tax) or the Big Savage Bunk Room (Room 202, sleeps six, $147.06 with tax). For the second night, the "open the full calendar" link extends the stay with the ride still in the cart. The ride stays $29 a person throughout; the rooms stay at their normal rates; the receipt itemizes lodging tax and activity tax separately.
