If you live on the West Virginia side of the mountains — anywhere out the Morgantown or Keyser direction — the best weekend trips are the ones that don't eat the weekend. Frostburg sits in far-western Maryland, minutes from the West Virginia line, an easy drive over ridges you already know. You leave after work on Friday and you're unpacked before the evening gets old. No airport, no interstate marathon, no committee meeting about logistics.
The anchor is The Tunnel Hotel at 20 Depot St: a stone-arch railroad inn standing since 1888, back when this valley moved coal and passengers instead of weekenders. The rooms sit beside the Frostburg depot and its old turntable, with the Thrasher Carriage Museum next door and the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail 300 yards away. Our line is "sleep by the rails," and here that's a literal description, not a slogan.
This page is the two-night plan: where to eat, what to ride, what's worth the short drive, and what it all costs. Spoiler on that last one — rooms start at $69.99, so the mountains are cheaper than staying home and ordering takeout twice.

Friday Night: Arrive Whenever the Mountains Let You
Check-in here is contactless around the clock — we text you a door code, and you let yourself in at whatever hour Friday finally releases you. There's no front desk closing time to race, which matters when you're crossing the state line after dark.
Once you've dropped your bags, dinner is a decision, not a scavenger hunt. The Trail Inn Cafe is on site with hot food, trail sandwiches, and local beer, and anything you order can be charged straight to your room. If you'd rather stretch your legs, downtown Frostburg's shops, restaurants, and breweries are a short walk up the hill — it's a genuine college-town main street, thanks to Frostburg State University.
Saturday: Railbikes by Morning, Steam by Afternoon
Saturday is why you came. Tracks & Yaks, our railbike outfitter at 19 Depot St, runs pedal-powered rides on real railroad track through the Alleghenies. The Woodcock Hollow Express covers 7 miles in about 90 minutes at $89 per tandem railbike — the right size for a first ride. Want the full production? The Mountain Ridge Rider is 3 hours and 15 miles at $119, rolling through the Brush Tunnel and the Narrows. And the Track and Yak pairs a railbike leg with a kayak paddle over 5 hours for $169.
Back at the depot, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's Frostburg Flyer — pulled by steam locomotive 1309 — arrives at 12:45 PM and departs at 2:15 PM. Watching a working steam engine take on the grade from a rocking chair's distance is the kind of thing border-country weekends were invented for. Fill the gap with the Thrasher Carriage Museum next door or the depot turntable a few steps away.
If two wheels are more your speed than four rail wheels, geared bicycle rentals run $25 for two hours or $40 for a full day, and the GAP trail starts 300 yards from your room. Ride as far as your legs vote for, then coast back to the cafe.
Sunday: Rocky Gap, Then the Short Drive Home
Checkout is 11:00 AM, which leaves Sunday wide open. Rocky Gap State Park is roughly 20 miles away — a lake, wooded trails, and mountain scenery that photographs better than it has any right to. The resort there also houses Rocky Gap Casino, if a table or a show is part of your idea of a weekend; it's there, it's real, and it's your call.
The quiet advantage of a getaway this close to the West Virginia line is the exit. You're not burning Sunday evening on a highway. Lunch at the park, an easy drive back over the ridges, and you're home before dinner with an actual weekend behind you.
Where You'll Sleep, and What It Costs
