The Two Rooms That Stay Warm
From November 15 to March 1 the inn winterizes most of its rooms and the campground — pipes drained, heat off — and keeps two upstairs units running. The Railrider Retreat Suite, Room 201, sleeps four and is the most space in the building at $169.86 a night with lodging tax included. The Big Savage Bunk Room, Room 202, sleeps six across a queen bed and two bunk sets at $147.06 with tax. Those are the winter rooms, and for the lights season they are the only two on sale.
Neither price changes because you are riding. The rooms cost in December what they cost in July, and the ride costs $29 a person — $20 on select December weeknights — whether or not a room is beside it. The site is deliberately not running a bundle; it just lets you buy both in one place.
How One Checkout Handles Two Taxes
Lodging in Allegany County carries a 14% tax (8% county hotel tax plus 6% Maryland sales tax). Tracks & Yaks activities carry a 5% activity tax. When you add a room to your tickets at tunnelhotel.com/book, the receipt shows two lines with two rates instead of one blended number, so a couple riding on a Saturday and sleeping in the suite sees $58 of ride plus $2.90 activity tax, and $149 of room plus $20.86 lodging tax. Nothing is hidden inside a package price, and nothing is double-taxed.
Booking It in Two Minutes
Start from the ride, not the calendar. On tunnelhotel.com/book choose your riders, tap a night between November 27 and January 2, and pick a departure — 5:00, 6:00, or 7:00 PM nightly, 8:00 PM Thursday through Sunday, nothing on December 24 or 25. Below the departures the two winter rooms appear for that same night; tap "Add this room" and the stay attaches at its normal rate. Want more than one night? A link opens the full calendar with your ride already in the cart.
Your confirmation email carries both the ride details and the stay. Check-in at the hotel is contactless around the clock: open Manage My Stay on your phone, tap Check In, and the door code appears. Riders still check in separately at the depot 30 minutes before departure to sign the waiver.
An Evening That Fits Together
Arrive mid-afternoon, drop bags, and eat at the Trail Inn Cafe downstairs — it is open 8 AM to 6 PM daily, which lines up with the 5:00 or 6:00 PM departures but not the later ones. Walk across to the depot at check-in time, ride the lights, and let the shuttle return you to within sight of your door. The 7:00 and 8:00 PM riders should plan dinner in advance: downtown Frostburg's restaurants and pubs are a walk up the hill, and the cafe will be closed by the time you are back.
The morning after belongs to the Great Allegheny Passage, 300 yards away. The grade toward Cumberland stays open all winter and makes a bright, flat, bare-tree walk before checkout at 11:00 AM. Big Savage Tunnel to the west is typically gated for the season, so head east.
Why Not Just Drive Home?
Plenty of people do; the ride is 30 minutes and the roads are fine. The overnight case is simple arithmetic: mountain roads after dark in December, kids asleep by the time the shuttle stops, and an 1888 railroad inn whose entire job for 138 winters has been putting cold travelers to bed a few steps from the tracks. Book the ride and a room together at tunnelhotel.com/book, or read the full ride guide at tunnelhotel.com/blog/mountain-christmas-light-delight-guide first.
