Steam Weekends: The Pairing Play
From roughly May to October, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad shares this mountain, with steam locomotive No. 1309 leading weekend trains. That opens the calendar's best two-for-one: the Queen City Combo, which sends you down the grade by railbike and returns you behind the locomotive, four hours from Frostburg at $169 per tandem or $299 per quad.
Even without a combo ticket, weekend railbikers get the show for free — the Flyer reaches the Frostburg depot at 12:45 PM, and watching 1309 work is worth building your departure time around.
Spring: The Quietest Green
May and June are the underrated months. The forest is freshly leafed, seasonal runoff is still moving through the hollows, and departure boards have room on them — you can often book a bike days out instead of weeks. If crowds bother you more than a cool morning does, this is your slot on the calendar.
